Payroll and WPS compliance for UAE businesses
    Why It Matters

Miss a WPS salary deadline, and MOHRE can freeze your ability to issue new work permits.

    The UAE Context

WPS isn't a payroll preference — it's how salaries are legally required to move.

The Wages Protection System is a MOHRE-mandated electronic salary transfer framework, and for most private-sector employers it isn't optional — it's the only compliant way to pay staff.

Salaries move through approved banks and exchange houses — not ad hoc transfers.

Employers register with WPS and pay wages exclusively through approved banks, exchange houses or financial institutions, submitting a Salary Information File (SIF) each cycle. Salaries must be paid at least once a month per the employment contract, and the system exists specifically to make late or missing payments visible to MOHRE immediately.

Getting the SIF format or submission timing wrong is a common, entirely avoidable source of compliance flags.

    Gratuity & End-of-Service

Gratuity calculations get complicated fast once tenure and partial years enter the picture.

An employee who completes at least one year of continuous service is generally entitled to 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years, and 30 days per year beyond that — calculated on basic salary, not gross, and pro-rated for partial years after the first.

We calculate this correctly at every exit, not just when a dispute forces a recalculation.

    FAQ
    Q1

What is the WPS and is it mandatory in the UAE?

The Wages Protection System (WPS) is a MOHRE-mandated electronic salary transfer system that requires private-sector employers to pay staff wages through approved banks, exchange houses or financial institutions. It's mandatory for the large majority of private-sector employers, both mainland and in most free zones, and exists to ensure wages are paid on time and in full.

    Q2

How often must salaries be paid under UAE labour law?

Salaries must be paid at least once a month, in line with the payment frequency stated in the employment contract. Persistent delays beyond the due date are treated as WPS violations by MOHRE, regardless of the reason for the delay.

    Q3

What happens if a company misses WPS deadlines?

MOHRE can restrict a non-compliant employer from issuing new work permits or labour cards, apply fines, and escalate further restrictions the longer wages remain unpaid. Repeated violations affect a company's standing with MOHRE well beyond the specific missed payment.

    Q4

How is end-of-service gratuity calculated in the UAE?

An employee who has completed at least one year of continuous service is generally entitled to 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years of service, and 30 days of basic salary for each additional year beyond that, calculated on the basic salary and pro-rated for partial years after the first.

    Q5

Do free zone companies need to use WPS?

Most free zones require WPS registration through MOHRE in the same way as mainland companies. A small number of financial free zones, such as DIFC and ADGM, operate under their own separate employment and wage protection frameworks, so it's worth confirming which regime applies to a specific free zone licence.

    Q6

Can payroll be run alongside bookkeeping under one team?

Yes. Payroll figures feed directly into monthly bookkeeping and financial reporting, so when a business uses both services, we run them on the same monthly cycle rather than as two disconnected processes.
